A bong, or water pipe, is designed for smoking herbs. The bowl holds and heats the herb, while the smoke travels through the downstem—a cylindrical piece connecting the bowl to the bong—allowing it to filter through water in the base. From there, the smoke flows up the neck to the mouthpiece, where it is inhaled.
